The snow returned today to remind everyone that winter isn't done with us yet. Almost fittingly, I also received my new Black Diamond Raven Ice Axe to help me deal with it.

I went for the 65cm version and for me, this feels like the perfect length. The Raven has a one piece head which is narrowed at the neck making it comfortable to hold when walking up a slope. It has a reassuring weight and feels properly robust, as it should. There is a nice rubbery grip at the end of the shaft which I also wanted, concerned that I wouldn't have enough grip with some of the gloves I wear.

I’m going to enjoy using this axe on all the fresh new snow and ice at the weekend.
